WiFi may get military-developed mesh networking to extend WiFi substantially from its normal 300-foot reach according to this USA Today article.

Mesh networks can transmit video, data and position information in addition to voice, so the technology could have wide applications.

Basically, it sounds like using peer-to-peer networking in combination with WiFi access points. [Dana Baggett]
