Apple Mail's Junk Mail Filter Less Efficient for You? Try the FREE JunkMatcher

Reader Matt Ruben agreed with our observation on the decline in effectiveness of Mail's Junk mail filter over time. He suggested a freeware utility named JunkMatcher. He wrote:

I agree about Junk Mail filtering being less effective than previously, but I don't think this is new with Mail 2.0 - I think it's been happening over time, as spammers have been getting more sophisticated.

At any rate, I find Benjamin Han's free JunkMatcher essential for bridging the junk filtering gap. Used in conjunction with Apple Mail, it takes care of well over 99% of my junk mail - I'm not exaggerating. I honestly can't remember the last time when more than two junk messages got through JunkMatcher's filters in any given 24-hour period.

Ben's just released a new version for Tiger, which installs more easily than previous versions, and which reduces the number of non-junk messages that accidentally get marked as junk. JunkMatcher used to mark about five good messages per day as junk; now it incorrectly marks zero or one message a day.
