Consumer Reports Magazine Gives High Marks to Macs--June Edition

Consumer Reports magazine (CR) for June 2006 landed in our staff mail boxes this weekend. Once again CR rates computers, this time desktops, laptops and monitors.

Apple leads field in brand repair history.

It is impressive that Apple once again leads all other brands with fewest repairs-serious problems in desktop computers between 2001 and 2005, based on 85,000 responses from CR subscribers. A similar survey eliciting 49,000 responses from CR laptop owners placed Apple together with other brands with fewest repairs-serious problems with no meaningful distinction amongst them.

Apple leads industry in tech support.

In a survey of CR reader experience with computer manufacturer technical support covering the period from September 2004 through January 2006, Apple hit home runs in both desktop and laptop categories. Readers scored Apple in the Very Satisfied category, the only brand so highly regarded.

Apple MacBook Pro scored higher than Windows models.

In what may be a first for CR, it rated the Apple 15" MacBook Pro highest overall when compared with 15 PC laptops.

CR's Quick Picks recommended Apple's Mac Mini in desktop computers and the Apple MacBook Pro amongst laptops "(f)or the best reliability and support." [Dana Baggett]
