Less Expensive SATA Drive to USB 2.0 and SATA Drive to FireWire Solutions for MacBook Pro

Since we posted our review of the $99.95 WiebeTech mini USB Dock for connecting a 3.5" SATA hard drive to a MacBook Pro, we have received a number of suggestions for less expensive solutions. They are out there.

For example, reader Dale Anderson suggested the Young Micro USB 2.0 to SATA (and IDE) Adapter for $29.95. This inexpensive and versatile adapter also works with 2.5" and 5.25" drives. A new version with an on/off switch will begin shipping 5-11-06.

We also found an outfit named CoolDrives.com that has many SATA to USB 2.0 and FireWire 400/800 cases with "cool" designs. For example, there is the Mini SATA/SATA II Hard Drive Enclosure with a USB 2.0 connection for $39.98, the SATA/IDE Combo Hard Drive Enclosure with FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 connections for $69.98 and the very cool Aluminum FireWire 800/400/eSATA/USB 2.0 Slim SATA/SATA II Hard Drive Enclosure for $93.79.

We have not bought items from either vendor so we can not vouch for them or the products. [Bill Fox]
