Apple's 30% Mac Shipment Growth Tops Vendors in U.S. for 2007 Q1

Apple is no longer a computer company? Says whom? According to Gartner Inc., Apple topped the list of computer manufacturers for sales growth in U.S. shipments of computers during the first quarter of 2007 with a 30 percent growth compared with shipments in the U.S. during the same quarter of 2006, i.e. 741,000 Macs to 570,000 Macs. Toshiba was second with 27 percent growth and HP was third with 26 percent growth.

In terms of total U.S. shipments, Apple stood fifth with a market share of 5.0 percent (up from 4 percent in 2006 Q1), just behind fourth place Toshiba with a 5.4 percent market share (up from 4.4 percent). Of the top three, Dell (#1) and Gateway (#3) lost market share. HP (#2) gained market share along with Apple and Toshiba.

Worldwide, Q1 2007 computer shipments increased 9 percent to nearly 63 million and HP took over first place from Dell with an 18 to 14 percent market share. Apple is included with the "Others" in the worldwide data presented by Gartner, Inc. [Bill Fox]
