Brief Hands-On Report--Mozilla released Camino 1.0.4

Camino 1.0.4 is the latest stable release of the Mac OS X native Web browser from Mozilla. It is available for download from this Mozilla Web page. According to Mozilla, the changes and improvements in 1.0.4 vs 1.0.3 are:

• Fixed several critical security and stability issues, including those fixed in version 1.8.0.10 of the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine.
  
• Sheets will now close as expected on Intel-based Macs.
  
• Upgraded the the bundled Java Embedding Plugin to version 0.9.6.
  
• Added support for importing iCab 3 bookmarks.
  
• Improved the handling of Internet Explorer .url shortcut files.
  
• The text of certain security dialogs now contains "Camino" instead of "(null)".
  
• Camino will now make a backup copy of the bookmarks file when it launches if the file is not corrupt.
  
• Camino will automatically restore bookmarks from a backup when it launches if they are unreadable.
  
• Further improved ad-blocking.
  

We downloaded and installed v1.0.4 over the 1.1b1 that we were using. WARNING, there is a bug in 1.1b1 that occasionally trashes the bookmark file--this happened to us once yesterday but the backup copy was fine. Using beta software is risky. After replacing 1.1b1 with 1.0.4, we encountered no problems surfing the Web. [Bill Fox]
