Garmin released WebUpdater for Mac v2.0.0.1 Beta (Universal) to Update Garmin GPS Units
Garmin continues its effort to become more Mac-compatible by releasing WebUpdater for Mac 2.0.0.1beta. It is used to update the firmware of Garmin GPS units and is available for download via MacUpdate.com or from this Garmin Web page. WebUpdater is a Universal Application for Intel-based Macs and Macs with a PowerPC G3 or later running Mac OS X 10.4.x.
According to Garmin,
- WebUpdater guides you through the process of updating the software in your GPS.
- WebUpdater finds the most appropriate update for your GPS from the Garmin web site and performs the update.
- WebUpdater for Mac is not compatible with Palm, Pocket PC, serial, fixed-mount marine, chartplotters, fishfinders and discontinued devices.
- WebUpdater for Mac does not perform Beta updates.
WARNING from Garmin: For some device updates, this software will clear user memory, including 'Recent Finds' and 'Favorites.' Please back up important data such as routes, tracks, and waypoints prior to updating.
We downloaded and installed Garmin's WebUpdater for Mac with no problem. It requires a restart. However, the application was unable to "see" our Garmin eTrex Vista GPS. We don't know if the problem is with WebUpdater or our IOGear USB to Serial adapter cable. We installed IOGear's driver for Intel-based Macs released in August 2006 and a USB device shows up in System Profiler but it may need an update for the latest version of Mac OS X 10.4.9. [Update: Several readers pointed out that Garmin's WebUpdater for Mac does not work with serial devices as noted above--duh! Apparently, this restriction also applies to serial devices with USB adapters.] [Bill Fox]
