MacInTouch 11/7 posted a MacBench 4.0 FPU score of 540 for the new Apple PowerMac G3/266 to be introduced on Monday. In comparison, my 8500 with a PowerLogix PowerBoost Pro 225 MacBenched at 823 with Motorola's MathLib on the FPU test, some 52+% faster. However, the PowerPC 750 (G3) chips are optimized for interger calculations and not floating point calculations. The FPU scores indicate how fast mathematical, statistical and most graphical operations are performed. The G3 machines being released by Apple do not appear to be among the fastest for these uses but they are not slouches, beating stock 8600/200's (FPU score 398) by nearly 36%. The MacBench CPU or processor scores when available will better measure speed for general use. The best relative measures will be Macworld's standard applications use test published in their tree-parts version.
