From reader Dana Baggett, "...I write in praise of a quality product that works. About 2-1/2 years ago, I invested in an APC Back-UPS Pro 280. This unit has surge protection for both power line and telephone line plus voltage control and battery back up. It cost about $150 back then. Less now. Anyway, Saturday night in the midst of a raging So'wester here on the Maine coast with winds over 60 MPH, our power went out and - worse - brown power surged back a couple of times before total darkness. However, my Mac never blinked. A soft beep from the 280 told me it was on battery back up. No problem. I had plenty of time to close out applications and shut down properly."
