Flashing "?"

There are at least two problems that result in a Flashing "?" within a diskette icon when the computer is started. One problem showed up early this year with System 7.6--it only occurs with a warm boot (or restart) and is basically an annoyance (see Macs Only!'s PowerBase Troubles Page). The other showed up with Mac OS 8 and it results from corruption of the hard drive leading to a total loss of data. It is this latter, serious problem that the new Drive Setup v1.3.1 and Mac OS 8.1 will fix. Drive Setup v1.3.1 will install a new ATA driver v3.0.7 which will prevent the underlying problem from occurring. Mac OS 8 installs v3.0.5. The driver version may be checked by highlighting the hard disk icon and selecting Get Info in the File Menu.
