Apple effectively lost the head-to-head OS competition with Microsoft some time ago when it lost the Windows look and feel lawsuit. Apple built on Xerox and Microsoft, in turn, built on Apple--we don't have to like it but that's been declared legal and a better Apple strategy is needed, one that can take the best possible advantage of Microsoft and Windows. Microsoft is an applications corporation, the biggest I believe, and collaboration can bring Apple a lot, at least in the short and medium run. Remember the old advice to first pick the applications one needs and not the platform? Well, this still applies and Microsoft collaboration can help Apple immensely. Yes, it galls me after thinking of Microsoft all these years as the darkside but I also remember that many of the very best applications for my first Macs were developed by Microsoft.
