PowerBase Owners

PowerBase Owners: PowerLogix's press release announced that their PowerForce G3 CPU cards (250 and 275 Mhz) are compatible with PowerComputing's PowerBase computers. This is very significant since the PowerBases come with 180-240 MHz 603e CPUs while the PowerForce Cards use PowerPC 750 (new generation 604e) CPUs with 1:1 backside cache and adjustable system bus speeds (the PowerBases have relatively slow 40 MHz buses). However, the PowerForce cards cost $2,000-2,500 while Apple's new Gossamer PowerMacs (233-266 Mhz PowerPC 750 CPUs and 66 MHz system buses) due out next week will start at $1,999--this is a "no brainer" to me until the cards drop to under $900 or so.
