From Robert Jagitsch, President of PowerLogix, two new PowerPC 750 (G3) CPU daughtercards were announced yesterday. PowerLogix now has a PowerForce G3 233 MHz CPU card that retails for $999 -- outstanding! This card has 512K of backside cache running at 117 MHz, a 2:1 ratio. With acceleration available on these cards, PowerLogix's card MacBenches at 880 CPU score versus 774 for the Apple G3 with a 233 MHz processor according to PowerLogix's news release. For the PowerBase owner, this card appears to be a competitive alternative to a new Apple PowerMac G3. The other card is identical except for a 250 MHz processor that MacBenches at 963 with acceleration and 1 MB of backside cache -- it sells for $1,399. I've asked PowerLogix to test the 233 MHz PowerForce because it actually makes economic sense for us lower-end PowerBase owners. [In a subsequent telephone conversation, Robert convinced me to not wait for several weeks for the new card and to test the presently available PowerForce 250/250. He is confident that this test will lay to rest any concern that the PowerForce cards will not perform as well in a PowerBase or be severely limited by the PowerBase's system bus speed of 40 MHz.
