Microsoft Internet Explorer v4.0 for the Mac -- Update 3

Jeff Gates reported IE4's MS Component Library (PPC) migrates by itself from the extensions folder to the disabled folder and he has to manually return it. Otherwise, he has no problems despite having IE3 installed (8600/7.6.1).

Richard Barts reported that IE4 installed ObjectSupportLib in the extensions folder despite using Mac OS 8--he removed it before it caused problems (8500/8.0). This may be the cause of many problems so look for it and remove it if you're using Mac OS 8.

Brock Sherman reported that deleting the Internet Config RandomSignatures extension eliminated the Outlook Express Preferences file error. Timm Liberty confirmed this solution.

To eliminate the OE preference file error, Chris Malanga recommended the procedure of deleting all remanants of IE3 and Internet Config 1.3 (IC), install IE4 with extensions off, open OE and enter the settings, then open IC1.4 and enter the settings.

Timm Liberty and others recommended large RAM allocations (12 MB for IE and 22 MB for NC) to eliminate the Type 1, 3 and 10 errors.

Albert Kleiman reported that IE4 severely limits the number of submenus that may be accessed from URL Manager Pro, a serious flaw for serious web surfers. In NC4, URL Manager is only limited by the amount a RAM allocated to it.

Richard MacLemale reported that complete site downloads by IE4, a very cool feature, are stored in files that only IE4 can open--would anyone have expected anything different from Microsoft? That's par for MS's course and an "F" in teacher MacLemale's.

Kathy Mihalisko, a Windows NT Administrator, reported that the Mac version of IE4 is less buggy and less damaging to one's OS than the PC version. She further reported that too many Context Menu plug ins caused IE4 to freak out, crash and destroy Outlook Express parts.

From Dick Chanslor who actually likes IE4 as it is stable for him, "I found at least two sites where IE4 refuses to display images, specifically maps, but downloads them instead. From the 'C from CompuServe' Research Community Web page, there are links to Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia "http://ntdwwabm.compuserve.com/grolier/" and Magellan Maps of the World "http://www.csi.com/research/cp/magellan/maps_free/magmaps.htm". At Grolier, if I search for a place, e.g. Africa, go to the Africa link, select Related Media, and click the "Africa" link to its map, instead of displaying the map, the download manager opens and the map is downloaded as AFRICA.JPG. Similarly, at Magellan, all maps are downloaded rather than displayed. To view them, I had to open them in a graphics program. 100% repeatable for me."

And then there is Clarence Ball who sent me an email with Netscape with wallpaper and two animated gifs, making a salient visual point about just how good Netscape Communicator's emailer really is.
