Microsoft Internet Explorer v4.0 Update

I clean-installed Mac OS 8 on my networked 8500, installed IE 4.0 (including Outlook Express and Network Show but not Personal Web Server) and reinstalled the extensions for my apps and utilities. I also made sure that Java JIT was checked. Then it seemed to work well so I can't identify what caused the initial problems. None of the type 3 crashes or startup freezes that I experienced Wednesday reoccurred. Later yesterday, reader Thomas Ahlfors wrote that he had the same problems but they were eliminated by removing Personal Web Server so that may be the workaround. Most of my email described problems similar to those that I experienced or complained about IE4 being very slow. Another reader claimed IE4 was faster, especially for reloading from cache on a G3 machine. A few emails related no problems and liking IE4, especially after removing the channel tabs (Explorer Bar). I'm going to continue using both IE4 and NC4.04 for the rest of the week and provide comments on Monday.

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous wrote to say that Mac OS 8.1 is in final candidate stage (good news if it is to come out in February) and the higher end PowerMac G3 project, called Power Express, has been canceled. The latter may have taken the form of the Utra-Fast SCSI drives, controllers and ethernet cards announced at Macworld as peripherals available for the present G3 PowerMacs. An upgraded 300+ MHz G3 CPU card could be added later.
