Village Tronic has two new drivers, Glide 1.2.2 for 3Dfx and 3D Overdrive RAVE v1.1, for its MacPicasso 540/3D Overdrive

combo. If you have these video cards, just request the new drivers here and Village Tronic will email them to you. The MacPicasso 540/3D Overdrive combo supports the new Quake v1.0.8.5 resolution of 800x600. Quake RAVE now works with the MacPicasso 540/3D Overdrive but who would use it with 3Dfx available? I've run Quake 3Dfx at full screen 800x600 on my 17" monitor with the MP540/3DO combo and it is terrific. The combo can be obtained from The Software Hut bundled for $549.95.

According to NEWS.COM, Citrix will soon offer software for Macs to run Windows applications like email, word processing, etc. off a server rather than as stand alone applications on each computer's hard drive. If this works well, it will be an excellent solution for large companies with mixed platforms operating off a server system. The server software will also work similarly with UNIX workstations.

Right after taking heavy flak from the education community for canceling the Newton OS, Apple yesterday announced a web site dedicated to education and providing educational tools called the Apple Learning Exchange. Regarding the Newton OS, Yahoo/Reuters reported that some Newton developers will rally at noon today at the Apple Store on Apple's Cupertino campus, to peacefully protest cancellation of the Newton OS. Here's a well-reasoned counterpoint to my editorial comments on the Newton OS cancellation from software developer Jeff Fabijanic of Primordial Software, a Newton developer and user. In addition, MacNN Soapbox has a good K-12 education rejoinder.

Apple posted a new Apple Memory Guide 3-98 (2.1 MB). Apple Memory Guide helps one to select and install the proper RAM cards. Viewing AMG requires Adobe Acrobat Reader v2.1 or greater.

Apple also posted Network Assistant v3.5.1b1 (1.8 MB + 1.3 MB for the manual), an application for Apple network administrators.
