I have called the Apple customer service line and spoke with two very concerned good listeners at Apple who asked me intelligent questions and were obviously taking notes regarding the info I gave them and stated at the conclusion that a 'case' had been opened with Apple as regards my complaint about the firmware 1.1 upgrade blocker. I have also emailed leadership@apple.com as well as signed a petition (or two? can't remember).... The only thing that will remedy this is a steady stream of well-spoken discontent aimed directly at Apple as I am sure you agree! I do believe, I must believe, as you do that Apple will fix this." [Letting Apple know that fixing this issue should be a priority will probably help ensure that it gets done at least in or around the release of Mac OS 9. Apple has a recent history of listening to its customers, especially when it's lots of them.--Bill]
