Mac OS X Server Runs On Many Non-G3 CPUs
according to Tim Seufert and even on the 603e's in the 2400c and 3400c PowerBooks. However, the problem is that the System Disk doesn't recognize that some computers exist like, for example, the 2400c. The System Disk checks the Gestalt number, the machine ID, so the trick is to fool the installer by changing the machine ID to one of a similar but recognized computer, like the 3400 for the 2400. Tim wrote a small program, Gestalt, which changes the computer's ID to anything you want. Gestalt is available for download exclusively from Macs Only!'s FTP site (21 KB). To use it Tim wrote, for example:
"To install OS X on the 2400, you'll need a SCSI CD-ROM which you can boot from. Boot the OS X install CD, run Gestalt to fake being a 3400, and then run the installer from the CD. At the screen where it complains that you are trying to install on an unsupported computer, look through the menus for something like "Options...". The dialog box will have a checkbox for installing on unsupported machines. Check it and continue the install. From that point on everything should be normal. Whenever you want to use the System Disk program from Mac OS, you'll have to run Gestalt beforehand."
