Apple Modem Updater 2.0
"This software bundle contains the new modem firmware for the internal 56K modem and updated AT command set. The updater installs version 2.3 of the Conexant firmware which contains the latest versions of both the V.90 and the K56flex protocols. The modems can use either the K56flex or V.90 protocols and will automatically negotiate with the service provider to use the appropriate one."
The ReadMe states that the connect speed after applying the modem firmware update could be lower that previously observed but that the throughput will be equal or greater. The update installed on my PowerBook (FireWire) and works with no drama. I noticed no reduction in connect speed nor increase in throughput in my Earthlink connection from a motel room in Santa Cruz, CA. Here is Dana Baggett's experience:
"I updated my iMac 350 SL with Modem Updater 2.0 successfully. The ReadMe doesn't say to restart so I didn't. I reconnected with my ISP - a new handshake sound is heard - and my connection speed was the same @ 48,000. But, the connection hung at authentication. Twice. Hmm."
"So, I shut the machine off and waited a couple of minutes. The ReadMe says the modem will reset itself in 40 sec. (The scenario the ReadMe contemplates is that the Updater didn't work. But mine did complete successfully.) After booting up again, I once again connected with my ISP @ 48,000. The sound again was the new handshake and, viola, this time I immediately went through authentication, etc. I tried another download of the same Modem Updater 2.0. The original download was about 5 k/sec. With the new modem firmware, the download was about 6 k/sec. So, admittedly with many variables not under control, it appears to have a higher throughput."
