TechTool Deluxe 2.5.4 Notes

from Dana Baggett. TTD 2.5.4 is an updater for the version of TechTool Deluxe that ships with an AppleCare Protection Plan package, not TechTool Pro. The updater for TechTool Pro will be out this week according to Micromat's Jeff Baudin. From Dana, "I downloaded the TechTool Deluxe 2.5.4 Update. You can't use it unless you have copied the TechTool Deluxe 2.5.2 folder from the CD to your hard drive (which makes sense since you can't update the application on the CD itself). If you already have TechTool Pro installed, you can't use it at all once it is installed on your hard drive. It advises that the preferences on the hard drive are incompatible. I believe you can use it from the CD. Of course there's not much point in doing so if you already have TTP.

In the interest of science, I copied the TechTool Deluxe 2.5.2 folder from the CD to a Performa 6116 hard drive which does not have TTP on it. Once so installed and launched, it asks that you insert the CD if you want to run it from the hard drive. When you run the 2.5.4 Update it completely substitutes a new 2.5.4 application for the prior one on the hard drive. The 2.5.2 application winds up in the trash. You then can run v. 2.5.4 from the hard drive without the CD. The new repair routines weren't obvious but I didn't explore any setting other than the default one. Both versions found the same minor problems on the Performa 6116 hard drive."
