Apple IP over FireWire Software Preview Release
"IP over FireWire Preview Release adds support for using the Internet Protocol - commonly known as TCP/IP - over FireWire. With this software installed, Macintosh computers and other devices can use existing IP protocols and services over FireWire, including AFP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc. In all cases, Rendezvous can be used if desired for configuration, name resolution, and discovery."
We have not tried it yet but IP over FireWire looks especially promising for Macs that have a FireWire port but do not have gigabit ethernet. FireWire has a maximum transfer rate of 400 Mbps, faster than ethernet (10 Mbps) or fast ethernet (100 Mbps). Gigabit ethernet shipped in recent Power Macs and PowerBooks can reach 1000 Mbps.
