QuickTime 6.0 PR is Out

and available for download. Here is the press release. Apple has been holding back QT6 because a a dispute over licensing fees. According to a CNet article, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said "The licensing stuff is getting worked out. Every 'i' is not dotted and every 't' is not crossed, but it's getting there. I have a lot of confidence it will. This is too important not to get worked out."

QuickTime 6 runs the new MPEG4 standard. One new feature is "instant on" streaming. We tried it and it is quite impressive. About 10-20% of a file loads instantly allowing the the streaming to start rather than waiting for buffering to occur. We installed QT6PR on a TiBook 500, 3 Cube 450s, 2 iBook Dual USBs, an iMac 350 SL and an iMac DV SE 400 with no problems. [Dana Baggett]
