Apple Now Selling the eMac Retail
according to this press release. The 17" CRT eMac's retail cost is $1099 or $1158 with a tilt and rotate stand. Originally announced for just the education market, the eMac is quite a nice low end consumer machine at $300 less than the low end LCD iMac. It is only slightly larger than the original iMac but it weighs in at 50 pounds. The eMac is quite a value package with its 17" CRT, CDRW drive, GeForce2 MX graphics, Firewire and 700 MHz G4 CPU.
Why now? The consumers demanded it according to Apple's CEO Steve Jobs. Phil Schiller, Apple's VP for Worldwide Product Marketing, is quoted in the Nando Times as stating: "We still think the flat panel is the future of our desktop line, but the costs of flat panels are still not as low as we'd like."
