Virginia Tech's G5 Cluster is Officially The #3 Supercomputer in the World.
The official list of the Top 500 Supercomputer Sites was released on Sunday according to this press release. Virginia Tech's supercomputer consists of an integrated cluster of 1100 dual 2-GHz Power Mac G5's (2200 CPUs). Here is the ranking write-up for the Virginia Tech site. The VT G5 cluster appropriately hit 10.3 teraFLOPS, not that far behind the #2 Los Alamos National Laboratory supercomputer, an HP (formerly Compaq) Alphaserver cluster at 13.9 teraFLOPS and just ahead of #4, a Dell PowerEdge cluster of 2900 CPUs at 9.8 teraFLOPS. Number 1 is still the Japanese Earth Simulator, a cluster of 5120 special NEC CPUs, reaching 35.9 teraFLOPS. [Dana Baggett]
