Control and Manage the Macs on Your Network for Free

We have been using Apple Remote Desktop v2.2 to manage the Macs on our combo wired and wireless network. It is an excellent network management application that we happened to get for free as a participant at an Apple Worldwide Developers Conference a couple of years ago.

Previously, we noted that by using the open source applications Chicken of the VNC and OSXvnc server one could manage Mac networks for free. With Mac OS X 10.4 all that's needed is just Chicken of the VNC since VNC support can be enabled in Tiger. VNC is enabled via the Sharing pane in Tiger's System Preferences--here is a nice tutorial from Macminicolo.net. Chicken of the VNC 2.0b3 is available from this SourceForge Web page. [Bill Fox]
