Hands-On Report--TechTool 4.0.5 Pro Updater

We downloaded this updater using MicroMat's "Download Site 2" which is on the MacUpdate.com server. Here's the Read Me about version 4.0.5:

New in Version 4.0.5

* Addressed compatibility issue with FirmTek SeriTek SATA card for Drives test.
* Improvements to the Volume Structures and Optimization routine.
* Improvements to Main Memory test while booted from TechTool Pro 4 CD.
* The eDrive routine will now create a 6GB partition required by Mac OS X 10.4.
* Added compatibility for new Macintosh models up to Summer 2005.

NOTE: Version 4.0.5 requires Mac OS X 10.3 or greater.

We have three installations of TT Pro, i.e., on the computer's hard drive, on the eDrive and on an external FW drive. The installer updated each one successfully, we thought, requiring a reboot in each case.

Although the updater we downloaded onto the internal hard drive said it updated successfully all three installed versions of TTPro 4.0.4, including the one on our external FW HD, in fact it corrupted the application on the external drive. We recall--too late of course--that this has happened before. Apparently, the updater should reside on the same hard drive as the application to really update successfully.

So, we had to boot with the external HD, uninstall the application using the TTPro CD, reinstall an earlier version of TTPro 4 from the CD download the updater again and run it. Later we ran the app using the eDrive on our internal hard drive. It ran well albeit with no apparent differences from its predecessors. [Dana Baggett]
