Intel-Based Mac Firmware Updates Do More Than Allow Windows Install?

Yesterday, we noted that Apple released a new firmware update along with Boot Camp, an assistant for installing Windows XP on a MacIntel (Mac mini, MacBook Pro and iMac). Apple's information was (and still is) sparse on the firmware upgrade and Apple also released a tool for reverting to the previous firmware version. Based on this we surmised that the update only provided for an easy Windows XP installation.

However, several web sites have reader reports that claim that the firmware update on a MacBook Pro, at least, provided other benefits such as fixing a processor noise and reducing the heat output. In addition, a Macs Only! reader Maarten Hazewinkel noted:

From what I understand, the firmware update that accompanies Boot Camp mostly adds a BIOS emulation layer to the firmware. This is a key part in getting windows to run. Additionally, beyond windows, it will also make it much easier to get Linux and other open source operating systems to run on the Mac Intels.
