CNet compared the three main online tax preparation services: TurboTax Premier Online, TaxCut Premium Online and TaxAct Online Ultimate Bundle. TaxAct is free to everyone for filing an IRS return, TurboTax Premier is free if you make less than $28,000 or $50,000 if you are on active military duty and TaxCut Premium is free if you are over 50. All charge something for the state return. Phone support is expensive for TurboTax ($10 per incident) and TaxCut ($20 per incident).
