Apple releases 8-core Mac Pro running at 3GHz

Today, Apple introduced a new top-end Mac Pro that includes 8 CPU cores, two quad-core "Clovertown" Intel CPUs running at 3GHz.

According to Apple,

Opt for the 8-core Mac Pro and you get the power of two Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Clovertown" processors running at 3.0GHz. Or choose a quad-core Mac Pro featuring two Dual-Core Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" processors and decide how fast they fly: 2.0GHz, 2.66GHz, or 3.0GHz. At 3.0GHz, the quad-core Mac Pro runs up to 2x faster than the Power Mac G5 Quad.

The standard Mac Pro configuration still has two dual-core 2.66GHz CPUs with 1GB of RAM for $2499. It can be downgraded to two dual-core 2.0GHz CPUs for $2200 or upgraded to two dual-core 3GHz CPUs for $3298 or, now, further to 8 CPU cores (dual quad-core 3Hz Clovertowns) for $3997, some $1498 above the standard configuration.

The rest of the Mac Pro seems to be the same, including the same three graphics cards. A top-end Mac Pro with 8 CPU cores, 2GB RAM and an ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card sells for $4,545 and will ship from the Apple online store in 3-5 business days. [Bill Fox]
