From the Dark Side: Nature and Science Journals discourage Microsoft Word 2007 Submissions

It's not just Mac users who are in a snit over Microsoft Office 2007's incompatible default so-called Open XML file format (.docx). Two prestigious scientific journals are now discouraging scientists from submitting articles typed up in Word 2007, even if they are subsequently converted to the older Word format (.doc). The reason is that the equations are converted to graphics which then can't be published easily electronically. The default equation editor packaged with Word 2007 is not compatible with MathML.
