For MacOS Users Only!

With today's edition, For MacOS Users Only! has become Macs Only! and has a new layout thanks to Bob Burdeau. There will be no change in editorial policy or content, just a shorter name that is easier to remember. Given that news is being carried nearly daily instead of a weekly summary, news will be archived after three days rather than once a week to speed up download time. The site was substantially updated over the Labor Day weekend:
  • The Mac OS 8 Installation and Use Page has been completely re-organized. It is now in the form of a reference note rather than mostly a day-by-day account of the issues arising during the first two weeks after Mac OS 8's release.
  • A mostly new Mac-Wintel Comparo Page has been added to the Reviews Section. This page will keep track of Wintel offerings in comparison with those from Apple and the principal Mac cloners at the lower end of 603e- and 604e-based computers.
  • The Software Update Page has itself been brought up to date.
  • My views on Apple and its struggle for survival, The Good Fight page has been updated.
  • Finally, The Hardware Corner, including RAM & You have been moved to a separate page to speed up the download time of the main (news) page.
An email from Dan Frakes, embargoed at his request until Tuesday, announced that his "... award-winning InformINIT, MacUser's Most Informative Product of 1997, has been updated. The new version weighs in with close to 30 chapters of information on control panels, extensions, and general System software and System Folder information. Yet another update is due in the next few weeks to cover tips and conflicts with OS 8."
