Macs Only!
now (mid-day) has a solid source regarding the Apple/PowerComputing deal, the Apple/Power joint press release. It seems that neither the prediction of an Apple buyout of Power (carried first by thessaSOURCE on 8/15 and then by Mac OS Rumors on 8/18) nor just an Apple buyback of Power's Mac OS license (carried first by MRP and MacInTouch on 8/21) were right. It is something in between--I guess one could say that both were half right. For $100 million in Apple's stock, Apple bought the key "Mac" assets of Power, including the license, the engineering, distribution and direct marketing personnel and the customer database. I'll have an analysis and some comments on this deal i.e. how it affects Power owners and the Mac "ship" generally in tomorrow's edition.
