Macs Only!

Robert Jagitsch, President of PowerLogix, has agreed to allow Macs Only! to test and review his company's PowerForce PowerPC 750 (G3) CPU daughtercard in Macs Only!'s workhorse PowerBase 180. He argues that because of the 1 MB backside cache working at the same speed as the CPU I should see the same performance, with minor variation due to drives and video, as with other high-end machines that this card has already been tested in, despite a system bus speed of only 40 MHz. MacBench scoring over 1,000 on a CPU in my PowerBase--wow, I can hardly wait! If the PowerForce CPU upgrade card performs as advertised in a PowerBase (and I have no reason to expect otherwise) there is good reason to consider hanging on to an "old" machine until the price of this or future cards fall enough to make economic sense for low-end Mac/clone owners. At the very least there will be one more option available to us, one that high-end Mac/clone owners already have in the present PowerPC 750 cards.
