Bare Feats posted a graphic rendering contest among a Power Mac G3/266, a 8600/300 and a 7500/250. The 7500 has a PowerLogix PowerBoost Pro 233 604e CPU card cranked up to 250 MHz. The winner was the G3 and significantly so.

Bare feats also posted a speed test between Mac OS 8 and 8.1. Mac OS 8.1 is as fast or even faster in several areas.

From Dana Baggett, here is a review of Claris Home Page 3.0 and Symantec Visual Page 1.1 web authoring software. The reviews are apparently for the Windows versions but Mac versions of both are available.

According to NEWS.COM, DOJ subpoenaed AOL, Earthlink, MCI and Sprint in its continuing investigation of Microsoft's business practices for anti-trust violations. An example is provided by a reader who found that MCI in providing internet service by online registration yields this message:

"Sorry,

Microsoft Internet Explorer software is currently required to register for MCI Internet Service. Keep checking back for updates."

When I visited using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 for the Mac and clicked the registration button, I got the same message--it seems that one needs the Windows version of MSIE to register, a double whammy!

Apple posted PB ZoomedVideo Update v1.3.1 (43K) for 3400/2400/G3 PowerBooks using the Zoomed Video PC card for video conferencing/capture running Mac OS 8.1.

From Johnny Lee, Pretty Scroll v1.0.5 (87K) is now available.This utility combined with ScrollMagick is terrific in making scrolling more efficient.

According to NEWS.COM, Symantec has been sued for charging for an upgrade to Norton AntiVirus 4.0 that basically fixes the year 2000 problem. I think we'll see more of this as people get fed up with paying for upgrades and updates that mostly fix problems with prior versions.

Regarding shrinking Mac-specific printer offerings and my constant rattle for a PC-style parallel port on Macs, ace reporter Dana Baggett notes that printChef for $45 through the end of March is designed to allow the use of PC-designed printers. This is in addition to PowerPrint and PowerPrint Pro that have been available for a long time.
