Solution?
I don't think there is one universal solution for DSDP. There are a few for this one cause. One can live with it, try using Internet Explorer/Outlook Express (works for me), use an emailer other than Messenger (Eudora or Claris Em@iler) with Netscape or possibly run Norton Disk Doctor 3.5.2 (not on HFS+ formatted drives) per Dana Baggett's result below. My email indicates that some people got DSDP before Mac OS 8.1, others get it with Internet Explorer/Outlook Express, some get it with Netscape versions earlier than v4.0.4 and still others report having DSDP (or double restart problem) without even going on line. For me, I am going to live with it as a tolerable annoyance, at least until Symantec releases a NUM update that works with HFS+. I would use Internet Explorer since I love the near-instant previous page feature but I really hate having to resize every email window, a far greater annoyance than DSDP. Using another emailer with Netscape would be more trouble.
From Dana Baggett, "To add to the [DSDP] mystery, the double shutdown I was experiencing has now gone. Healed. The only thing I have done is the run NUM Speed Disk 3.5.2 which I reported to you yesterday. I have not reformatted my disk as you know. I do get the gratuitous three empty "rescued from" files from time to time from Communicator in my trash at start up." Be sure to not use NUM 3.5.2 on an HFS+ formatted drive--see next item. Dana uses Netscape Communicator 4.0.4.1. [Update: Ken Glinka ran NDD 3.5.2 among other things and the DFSDP is gone except for the trash icons]
