Comment--Apple G4 Cube "Cracks" Deja Vu

in this CNet article. I believe that I was among the first to receive a G4 Cube which arrived on August 14th. It was gorgeous beyond expectation and every surface of it, the speakers, the amplifier, the mouse and the keyboard was lovingly protected with a thin plastic sheet covering. I was impressed. Then complaints about "cracks" began to appear on Cube discussion lists as others received their Cubes. Initially, I dismissed them as bad luck or bogus. After all, my Cube was perfect.

But more reports appeared along with images of the "cracks" so I decided to take a much closer look at my Cube. Sure enough, they were there--identical to those reported but very tiny hair line "scratches" (clearly not "cracks") that my finger nail could find even when my eyes could not. Much ado about nothing was my reaction. Apple posted responses, including a TIL, that these marks were not "cracks" or "scratches" but were actually mold lines unavoidably caused by the polycarbonate injection molding process. The fact that they are all identical among Cubes supports this explanation so I thought that was the end of it.

Sure, Apple is selling the elegant design but it is also selling power, small size and quietness which greatly outweigh any minor, largely imperceptible molding flaws in the Cube's clear polycarbonate case. No one has ever come into my office and inspected my Cube close up and said "Hey, it's 3-4 tiny scratches. Boy, did you ever get ripped off!" Just the opposite. In fact, I don't ever notice the lines even though I now know that they are there, thanks to all the hype.

What next from the nattering nabobs of negativism? "Oh no! There are slight indentations in the new 15" LCD Display's ADC cable caused by the twist ties. Let's blast Apple for that...." Give me a break, will ya?
