Mac OS X Installation on an iBook 466 and iMac 350 SL

"Installation on my iBook 466 which is relatively 'clean' took about 20 minutes, just as you reported. I went through the various registration screens and voila, I was on the www. I had previously taken AppleWorks back down to 6.0.4. I used my SuperDisk drive - worked fine - to run the installer for AW 6.1 beta and it worked, too. Now I have the beta version on the iBook.
"Installation on the iMac 350 SL took longer. Incidentally, I installed on single partitions on both machines. Probably a bit devil-may-care but it worked fine with Mac OS X PR. The iMac installation took about 35 minutes. Some of the time the installer was 'removing unnecessary files' which probably refers to the Mac OS X PR ones. The installation was successful.
"After rebooting into Mac OS X on my iMac it seems apparent that my Mac OS X PR preferences carried over in terms of appearance. Several question marks in the Dock, which [probably mean that the former PR applications are no longer available. It was good to see that the Explorer carried over my prior bookmarks, etc. I wonder if I can import them on the iBook from Netscape Communicator 4.76?
"I must say that I was a bit intimidated after installing Mac OS X on the iBook. I'm not that familiar with it yet and the Mac OS X seemed so different. I thought for a moment of stopping there and keeping my iMac on Mac OS 9.1. But I decided that if I was ever going to get comfortable with Mac OS X, it was full immersion or nothing.
"Now I'm in love again. Just finding a few familiar landmarks carried over from the PR edition gives me confidence.
"BTW. The Mac OS 9.1 in the box is the same one we bought a few weeks ago. I didn't bother to reinstall since I'm up to date.
"Also, while many sites are saying that folks ought to wait on installing the firmware updates, the instructions for installing Mac OS X make quite a bit out of installing the latest and greatest. Apparently, the 'smart installer' will prompt you for such an update if it detects old firmware. It didn't happen here, of course, since I had installed the firmware updates."
We have now successfully and easily installed Mac OS X on a G4 Cube, Power Mac G4 533 DP, iBook 466 and iMac 350 SL. We will post our experience from time to time as we use Apple's new OS.
