We updated our 10 GB iPod but, since we had Mac OS X 10.1.5 installed, we were forced to use the "Restore" button rather than the "Update" button. Using the "Update" button caused our iPod to dismount so that the updater would not run as has happened for the past several updates.
We are disappointed that Apple seems to not want the iPod to be used as a bootable FireWire drive. This capability in early versions of the iPod's firmware was a major attraction for us since we could just take the iPod while traveling to enjoy music and to have a backup external hard drive in one peripheral. We can still do so but we have to go through the trouble of reinstalling Mac OS X 10.1, updating to 10.1.5 and reinstalling the necessary applications. Apple also made it difficult to install 10.2 on iPods. We certainly don't understand why Apple would remove this feature.
