New Ascent XHD 800 FireWire Drive
Akumen Online, Inc. announced the debut of their Ascent XHD 800, a full featured, high performance FireWire hard drive system employing the new, faster FireWire 800 standard. The Ascent Series of hard drives includes an enclosure kit for those building their own drives and a series of high speed external hard drive packages available in capacities up to 320 Gigabytes (GB). FireWire 800, or 1394b, makes possible throughputs up to 800mbps, and these first available drives nearly double the speed of traditional or legacy FireWire.
The Ascent XHD 800 has a combo dual interface with both FireWire and USB 2.0, the speedier new USB standard, so it will plug and play on virtually any computer. It includes a legacy 1394 port, so it can be run on existing FireWire systems as well as on new and emerging 800Mpbs FireWire equipped workstations. It boasts the industry leading Oxford 922 FireWire/USB bridge for the fastest available FireWire 800 performance. A 320 GB drive will hold about 24 hours of digital video footage, and the extra speed makes this solution highly suited for video, audio and other bandwidth intensive applications.
