Consumer Reports Rates Apple Tops in Reliability and Support

for both laptops and desktop computers in its September 2004 edition. From surveys of CR subscribers:

Under Repair History, readers reported on their experience with over 105,000 laptops and desktops. Out of eight manufacturers Apple scored best - fewest repairs/serious problems.

Under Tech Support - Desktops, CR conducted two surveys. One involved 4,900 desktop computers. Readers scored Apple highest overall - 16 points higher than the nearest competitor - and gave it top ratings under all four categories of Solved problem, Support staff, Waiting on phone and Web support. No other brand scored as high in any category.

Under Tech Support - Laptops, based on 4,000 laptops CR readers again scored Apple highest overall - 13 points higher than the nearest competitor - with top ratings in all three categories of Solved problem, Support staff, and Waiting on phone.

In Consumer Reports' Quick Recommendations, the magazine notes "(Apple) has ... been among the more reliable brands of desktop... has been among the more reliable brands (of laptops) and is the leader in tech support." [Dana Baggett]
