Microsoft released a patch for Office 2004 for Mac. It is available using AutoUpdate via "Check for Updates" under the Help menu in one of the applications or as a stand-alone updater from this MacUpdate.com Web page. [Update: Microsoft pulled the updater very early this morning.]

According to the ReadMe file, the improvements are:

3.1 Improvements for all Office 2004 applications

3.1.1 Security is improved
This update fixes vulnerabilities in Office 2004 that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code.

3.2 Improvements for PowerPoint 2004

3.2.1 Stability is improved
This update fixes an issue that causes PowerPoint to quit unexpectedly when you open a presentation.

3.3 Improvements for Entourage 2004

3.3.1 Contact names that contain special characters are handled correctly
This update fixes an issue that causes meeting requests to display incorrectly when sent to contacts with names that contain single quotation marks ('), double quotation marks ("), and parentheses.

3.3.2 Public folder messages are not duplicated
This update fixes an issue that causes duplicate messages to appear in public folders.

3.3.3 Compatibility with Mirapoint Message Server™ is improved
This update fixes an issue that causes Entourage to quit unexpectedly when accessing mail folders on a Mirapoint Message Server.

We downloaded the stand-alone updater and ran it on our copy of Office 2004 for Mac. No problems were encountered during the updating nor during brief use of each application. [Bill Fox]
