Microsoft released a patch for Office v.X for Mac. It is available using AutoUpdate via "Check for Updates" under the Help menu in one of the applications or as a stand-alone updater from this MacUpdate.com Web page. [Update: Microsoft pulled the updater very early this morning.]

According to the ReadMe file, the improvements are:

3.1 Improvements for all Office v. X applications

3.1.1 Security is improved
This update fixes vulnerabilities in Office v. X that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code.

3.2 Improvements for PowerPoint X

3.2.1 Stability is improved
This update fixes an issue that causes PowerPoint to quit unexpectedly when you open a presentation.

The updated files are:

Microsoft PowerPoint 10.1.9
MS OLE Library (Carbon) 10.1.9
MS Structured Storage (Carbon) 10.1.9

The application versions are now: Word 10.1.8, Excel 10.1.8, PowerPoint 10.1.9 and Entourage 10.1.6.

We downloaded the stand-alone updater and ran it on our copy of Office v.X for Mac. No problems were encountered during the updating nor during brief use of each application. [Bill Fox]
