Tip--Your Intel Mac After Golden Gate: Three Realistic Options, and the One We Recommend

If you own a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, a 2020 iMac or Mac mini, or a 2019 Mac Pro, macOS Tahoe is the last major release you get; Golden Gate is Apple silicon only. Here is what that means in practice and what we would do.

Option 1, stay on Tahoe and keep it patched. Apple's habit is to ship security updates for the two previous macOS releases, and Tahoe 26.6.2 arrived August 17 with fixes back-ported from the Golden Gate beta (Apple's security releases page lists them). Expect Tahoe patches through roughly fall 2028. The current Tahoe feature set is documented in Apple's what-is-new page. This is our recommendation for anyone whose Mac is doing its job.

Option 2, OpenCore Legacy Patcher. OCLP has kept unsupported Macs on new releases for years, but it is winding down: the project stopped accepting donations in March and its lead developer joined Apple, per AppleInsider, and the team's own Tahoe tracking issue says they do not know whether a patcher for anything after Tahoe is feasible. As Greg Gant and AppleInsider both argued last year, the end of Intel macOS is the end of the road for OpenCore. Use it to get an older Intel Mac onto Tahoe if it is not officially supported; do not plan on it for Golden Gate.

Option 3, another OS. Intego's guide to keeping older Macs secure covers the Linux route for machines that have aged out of patches entirely. That is a fine second life for a 2015 MacBook Air; it is premature for a 2020 machine that still has two years of Apple updates.

The short version: run Tahoe, keep Software Update on, and buy your next Mac when Tahoe's last patch ships, not before. An M4 Mac mini costs less than the Intel Mac Pro's wheels did. [Macs Only!]
