Several readers wrote me about a shutdown problem with Mac OS 8.1 traced to after using Netscape 4.0.4. The computer does not shut down on the first try but does on the second. I have not had this happen except once, last night, and it has not repeated. MacFixIt 2/6 has more details. [Update--It has now happened several more times on the 9600 with Netscape Communicator 4.0.4.1-128 bit.]
According to MacWEEK, the fourth generation PowerPC CPUs, the G4's are well on their way. While G3 CPUs were designed to work in existing PowerPC machines, copper technology will require systems to handle lower voltages and may raise a backward compatibility issue.
Also according to MacWEEK, Apple may drop some technology from the next Mac OS version (8.2? 8.5? 9?) due this summer to keep its release on schedule. The Customer Release 1 (formerly Preview Release) of Rhapsody, the NeXT OS, is slated for this May with CR2 in 1999.
