Double Shut Down Problem--Revisited 3

Going out on a limb again, I think that reader Ken Glinka found at least one of the causes of the double shut down problem, i.e. having to choose the Shut Down command twice to shut down.

Ken wrote me that he had the double shut down problem after going online with Netscape only if he used Netscape Communicator's emailer. If he went online and used Netscape but not the emailer, then he could shut down normally, i.e. with one shut down command. I noted this on yesterday's page. He also said he got icons in the trash after unzipping files with ZipIt v1.3.8.

I got to thinking about the problem and realized that I had never used Netscape's emailer on any computer except the PowerBase (NC 4.04se) and 9600 (NC 4.0.4.1se) since installing Mac OS 8.1. I have the double shutdown problem with the 9600 but not the PowerBase--the only difference being the NC version and the computer, of course. I tried emailing on the 8500 (NC 4.0.4.1se) and every time I used Netscape mail I had to select Shut Down twice to shut down and every time I didn't use mail only one Shut Down command was required. The same result as with the 9600 and both have NC 4.0.4.1se. Curiously, the PowerBase with NC 4.0.4se seems impervious to the problem and perhaps the problem is with the difference in Netscape version.

If I use Internet Explorer 4.0 and Outlook Express 4.0c for email, I do not get the double shut down problem. It seems to be a problem with Netscape Communicator 4.0.4.1se (i.e. super encryption version) when using email on Netscape's Messenger. However, to confirm this I will have to download 4.0.4.1se onto the PowerBase.

A telephone survey of CompUSAs conducted by O'Grady's PowerPage 2/12 reported that only about a third of CompUSA's are selling the PowerBook 2400/180 for $1799. The rest are selling it for $1999.
