Speed Up Mac OS X's Finder?

Various web sites carried the recommendation (rumor?) that installing the Developer Tools from the CD that came with Mac OS X will speed up Mac OS X. We did so on our 400 MHz PowerBook 2000 (Pismo) just to see. Max OS X seems to run about as well on our Pismo as on our Cube and 533 DP. We were skeptical because the Read Me file states: "You should only install this software if you are a programmer or intend to develop applications."

In our experience, there is no perceptible change in startup or Finder speed, i.e. application launch, menu drop or scrolling. If anything, the startup and Finder seem a mite slower. We recommend that you do not waste your time and disk space installing the Developer Tools unless you use them. We are chalking this up to rumor fueled by the "Optimizing System Performance" message displayed at the end of the installation.
