Microsoft Office v.X 10.1.7 Update Version Confusion

On Tuesday, we noted that Microsoft had just released Office v.X 10.1.7 Update. Reader John Haumann wrote that there already was a 10.1.7 update in February 2006 and that his Excel X and PowerPoint X applications were already at v10.1.7.

Well it turns out that John's right. Microsoft's Web page shows Office v.X 10.1.7 update is new and dated July 11th and the last general Office v.X update release was 10.1.6 in October 2004. But Microsoft released an Excel X security update in February 2006 and a PowerPoint X security update in May 2006. The disk image file for the February Excel X security update is even called ExcelX-1017UpdateEN.dmg These two security updates resulted in 10.1.7 version numbers for Excel X and PowerPoint X.

The new Office v.X 10.1.7 Update fixes some security issues affecting Word X and Excel X and changes Word X to 10.1.7 but still leaves Excel X and PowerPoint X at 10.1.7 and all three have a 6/20/06 date. Entourage X is still at 10.1.6 (5/23/06). Got it? Thanks, John. [Bill Fox]
