Pages, Numbers and Keynote 15.4.1 Are Out With an Intelligent Assistant--The Beta Drafts, Builds Formulas and Generates Slides for Creator Studio Subscribers at $12.99 a Month in US English Only, Apple Pulled All Three Apps Within the Hour on October 22, and a 15.4.2 Followed That Night Saying Only "Bug Fixes"

Pages, Numbers and Keynote 15.4.1 reached the App Store between 10:07 and 10:10 a.m. Pacific on October 22, by our conversion of the timestamps on Apple's Pages listing and its Keynote listing and Numbers listing, with release notes that lead with "Intelligent Assistant (Beta)" for Apple Creator Studio subscribers. Before 11 a.m. all three apps were gone from the App Store, and by early afternoon they were back, according to MacRumors. At 8:50 p.m. Pacific a 15.4.2 of each appeared with one sentence of notes: "This update contains bug fixes and performance improvements." It puts a natural-language assistant inside Apple's own word processor, spreadsheet and presentation app, and it costs $12.99 a month.

What the 15.4.1 notes promise

The 15.4.1 notes, still in each app's version history on October 23, describe an assistant that "understands your document" in Pages, "understands your spreadsheet" in Numbers and "understands your presentation" in Keynote. In Pages you can "Start a first draft, then edit, organize, and elevate your writing" and "Draft a section, adjust your tone, or generate images and shapes using natural language." In Numbers you can "Uncover insights, build complex formulas, and visualize your data" and "Generate tables, get chart suggestions, and get help with formulas using natural language." In Keynote you can "Build your story, add animations, and refine your slides" and "Generate slides, presenter notes, images, and shapes using natural language." All three say you can "Search for up-to-date information on a topic and incorporate it." For everyone, Keynote 15.4.1 adds import and export in "Keynote's new Interchange Format (.keyx), an open file format that makes it easier to work with content outside of the app (beta)." The footnote on the assistant reads: "US English only. Requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or later." It names no Mac. The listing itself asks for macOS 26.0 or later, and Apple's Creator Studio support page, dated October 14, says "Full Apple Creator Studio functionality is available with macOS 27, iPadOS 27, and iOS 27."

Apple pulled the apps before 11 and shipped 15.4.2 by night

MacRumors reported at 11:01 a.m. Pacific that Apple had removed Keynote, Pages and Numbers from the App Store just after the update, that "It is not clear if the apps were removed intentionally, or if it is a bug," and, in an update, that "The Mac versions are back without the new update" while the iOS versions had not returned. 9to5Mac had quoted the notes at 10:44 a.m. At 1:02 p.m. MacRumors' second report said "The update is available again following the temporary removal of the apps from the App Store," and that the updates add iPhone Duo support, which the notes do not mention. Then came 15.4.2, timestamped 03:50 UTC on October 23 on all three listings, with no word about the assistant. Apple has not said whether 15.4.2 carries it. Apple's page on the intelligence features in Creator Studio, dated September 29, lists image and shape generation, Magic Fill in Numbers and, in Keynote, Generate Presentation, Generate Presenter Notes and Slide Clean Up, and does not name an assistant. We have not installed either build.

What it costs and what you keep

Apple's Creator Studio page puts the subscription at "$12.99 per month or $129 per year after your free trial," with one month free, $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year for students and educators, and three months free with a new Mac or iPad. Apple's January 13 announcement set the January 28 launch and the contents: Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage, and premium content and intelligent features in Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform. The three apps stay free, and the support page says a lapsed subscriber keeps "Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform but without the intelligence features."

Then and now

On October 23, 2001, our list of the improvements in Mac OS X 10.1's Mail 1.1 ran Apple's 22 bullets, our count, ending "Lots of bug fixes, of course," and then reported "more frequent unexpected quits" than Mail 1.0. Our February 2003 review of Keynote 1.0 paid $99 for a box printed with Steve Jobs' line that it was for "when your presentation really counts," and our January 2006 note found iWork second only to Office in U.S. retail office-suite sales, at 2.7 percent. Then the apps came in a box and the release notes were the whole story. Now the apps are free, the assistant is $12.99 a month, and the notes went live less than an hour before the apps were pulled. Those notes are still Apple's only description of the biggest change to these three apps since the subscription began, and we would wait for Apple to say what 15.4.2 is before paying to try the beta.
