Update to AirPort Utility 5.1 on Macs w/o AirPort Utility 5.0 Previously Installed

AirPort Utility 5.0 came with our new AirPort Extreme 'n' Base Station. It replaces AirPort Admin Utility and is a much better application. Late week an update, AirPort Utility 5.1, came out and we noted in our Brief Hands-On Report that the installer did not run unless AirPort Utility 5.0 was installed.

However, AirPort Utility 5.1 and its companion AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow Base Stations, can be extracted from the installer using the shareware application Pacifist 2.0.1 (the latest version). The other files, AirPort Disk Utility and AirPort Disk Agent, only work with the new AirPort Extreme 'n' Base Station.

Alternatively, one can use a right click (or control-click) to navigate through the installer packages as follows:

1. Download AirPort Utility 5.1 and mount its disk image.
2. Control-click on the install package, choose "Show Package Contents".
3. Go to Contents/Packages.
4. Control-click on AirPortUtility.pkg, choose "Show Package Contents".
5. Go to Contents and double-click on Archive.pax.gz.
6. It will uncompress to where you have set your downloads to be as a folder named "Applications".
7. Look in the new Applications/Utilities folder for AirPort Utility and move it to your regular /Applications/Utility folder.
8. Then do the same for APAdminUtility425.pkg to get "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow" and put it in your regular /Applications/Utility folder.

We used both methods on Macs without AirPort Utility. [Dana Baggett & Bill Fox]
