macOS 27.2 is Out--Build 26B123 Brings Siri AI in Five More Languages, Suggestions in Messages and New Keyboard Sliders, Tahoe 26.7.2 and Sequoia 15.8.2 Get the Security Fixes, and Nothing Apple Published Says /etc/ssl/cert.pem Changed

Apple released macOS Golden Gate 27.2 on October 26, the first feature update to macOS 27, through Software Update in System Settings. Apple's update notes lead with Siri AI, which now keeps context from earlier conversations and speaks French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, and they put Suggestions in Messages, one of the two Apple Intelligence features held back from Golden Gate in September, on the Mac at last. The same day Apple shipped macOS Tahoe 26.7.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 for Macs that stay behind. Whether 27.2 rewrites /etc/ssl/cert.pem for the eMudhra certificates, no Apple page says.

Siri AI gets a memory and five languages

The notes say the update "provides enhancements to Siri AI with the ability to retain useful context from previous Siri interactions as well as draw from a wider range of personal context." Apple's October 26 press release says Siri AI "is expanding to more people around the world, with availability now in the French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish languages," in beta, with Chinese (traditional), Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese "coming by the end of the year." The release repeats that Siri AI is "subject to daily usage limits" and that "Expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future," the limits our September 15 report on Golden Gate described.

Messages gets its suggestions and the keyboard gets new sliders

The notes say the update "introduces Suggestions in Messages that help you take quick actions in apps like Calendar and Reminders based on context from your conversation." As read on October 27, Apple's macOS page still footnotes the feature as "coming in a future software update," and the Passwords fix, the other held-back feature, is not in the 27.2 notes. Photos adds SynthID watermarking "to help identify whether an image was generated or modified with generative tools." Not in Apple's notes but in MacRumors' report: the update "overhauls the brightness and volume sliders" and "adds code referencing new touch-specific gestures in apps like Safari, Notes, Photos," the gestures our October 20 report on the release candidate noted for a Mac Apple had not announced. 9to5Mac lists the build as 26B123, up from the release candidate's 26B118.

Seven fixes for managed Macs, and Rosetta stays put

Apple's enterprise notes for Golden Gate list seven changes in 27.2, and one reaches past the enterprise: "Rosetta is no longer removed when upgrading to macOS 27." Four concern Platform SSO. Two are plain bugs: a MacBook Neo that "restarted unexpectedly while using an external camera," and third-party remote access apps that "could not move windows on a target Mac."

The security notes cover everything but one file

Apple's security notes for macOS 27.2, released October 26, run from Accelerate Framework to zsh; Mr. Macintosh counts 263 CVEs. Apple's security releases page dates macOS Tahoe 26.7.2, macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 and Safari 27.2 for those two systems October 26 as well, so older Macs have their patches too. What the 27.2 page does not have is an entry for /etc/ssl/cert.pem. Apple's support document on the eMudhra certificates, as read on October 27, still says the file "will be updated in a future macOS update" and does not name 27.2, and our October 26 Follow Up has Apple's four commands for editing it by hand. We have not checked a Mac on 27.2 ourselves. If you edited the file, Apple's own warning is that an update can put its version back, so run the check command again after installing.

What to do now

The update is in System Settings, General, Software Update on any Apple silicon Mac running Golden Gate, and the notes close with "This release includes additional features, bug fixes, and security updates for your Mac." Our advice from the release candidate stands: back up first, and give it a day or two on a spare Mac. A Mac on Tahoe or Sequoia should take 26.7.2 or 15.8.2 and Safari 27.2 now. We'll post a hands-on report after we install it.

Then and now

On October 27, 2003, our first impressions of Panther began with the copies arriving the afternoon before and going onto several Macs at once: four CDs, and advice to choose Archive & Install "for maximum safety." Our Panther speed tests the same day found it "much faster in some very important aspects," Mail above all. Then a feature release came in a box and the speed was the story; now it comes down Software Update, the story is what Siri will say in Spanish, and the thing we most want to know, whether one text file in /etc/ssl changed, is in no note Apple wrote. One sentence on Apple's support page would settle it, and we think Apple owes its Terminal users that sentence.
